Testing begins on increased thrust F100 engine

Defense Daily, Dec 6, 1991

Engine builder Pratt & Whitney said yesterday it has begun ground tests on an increased thrust version of the F100 jet engine, called the IPE-94, which is used in Air Force F-15 and F-16 fighters.

Advances to the engine include a larger-diameter, wide-chord fan and higher-temperature turbine components to give the IPE-94 20 percent more thrust than the F100-PW-229, the company said. The IPE-94 will have a 9.5 to 1 thrust to weight ratio and the F100 has an 8 to 1 ratio, Pratt said. Pratt said the engine is expected to run at 36,000 pounds of thrust this month.

The IPE-94 will be available in 1997 to upgrade F-15Es and F-16C/D aircraft.
