In recognition of the authorship of "Assessing Technology Projects Using Real Options Reasoning, "deemed to be the best original paper published in RESEARCH*TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT in 2000.
The winning paper was selected for pertinence, significance and originality of new management concepts related to the field of research management.
Rita McGrath is an associate professor in the Management Division of Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, New York, New York. Her research focuses on entrepreneurial and innovative strategies in uncertain environments. Her recent research and consulting clients have included DuPont, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and the Sonera Corporation. She received her Ph.D. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and has published in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Harvard Business Review, and other journals.
Ian MacMillan is the Fred R. Sullivan Professor of Entrepreneurship and executive director of the Sol C. Snider Entrepreneurial Research Center and the Goergen Entrepreneurial Management Program at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. With current research interests in entrepreneurship, technology management and strategy, he has worked with General Electric, DuPont, IBM, Citibank, American Re-Insurance, Matsushita, and Texas Instruments. He has published widely on entrepreneurship, competitive strategy and corporate innovation, and holds a D.B.A. from the University of South Africa.

The award, a bronze replica of the famous World War I fighter plane, the Jennie, flown by Holland, symbolizes the dynamism and spirit of IRI's founder. It was presented by IRI chairman Paul Germeraad (left) and Brian Burrows, chair of RTM's Board of Editors.
