Japan Airlines, one of the earliest and biggest customers for the Boeing 787, said the delay would cost the airline more in extra fuel. "The 787 is an extremely fuel-efficient aircraft," said Japan Airlines' chief executive Haruka Nishimatsu, on the sidelines of a press conference in Los Angeles. "A delay will impact us significantly." Apr 10, 2008

Japan Airlines, which has 35 of the planes on order, fell 2.3 percent on the news of further delays on the 787. Spokesman Hirokazu Inoue said it would start talks with Boeing about compensation once the impact became clear. Japan Airlines and ANA, the only two customers buying the shorter-range 787-3 variant of the 787, may be among the hardest hit. Apr 10, 2008

Northwest Airlines, the fifth-largest U.S. carrier, which is buying 18 of the planes, expected to get an updated delivery schedule from Boeing in the next couple of weeks, said spokeswoman Tammy Lee. "We are disappointed by the latest delays, but we still believe the 787-8 will be a game-changing airplane for our fleet," Lee said, adding that Northwest would initially use Boeing's older and larger 747-400 jumbos for international flights where it had planned to introduce its 787s. Defense companies in Arizona will benefit from the $515.4 billion defense budget proposed by President George W. Bush. The package will benefit small and large defense firms, observers say, and they note that it includes $2.3 billion for Raytheon missiles and $800 million for Boeing to remanufacture Apache helicopters. "There is plenty of work for everyone," Frost & Sullivan military aerospace and military analyst Brad Curran said. Congress is considering the budget now. Apr 7, 2008
