Policies governing the export of commercial satellites and their components are hurting the U.S. space industrial base, according to a report released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The study recommends removing commercial communications satellites, subsystems and components from the U.S. Munitions List and suggested further study to determine whether other nonmilitary systems should be available for export. Tests run on soil gathered by NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander show that soil on Mars is much like Earth's, scientists say. "Over time, I've come to the conclusion that the amazing thing about Mars is not that it's an alien world, but that it's actually very Earth-like in a lot of aspects," said Sam Kounaves, the Tufts University scientist who led the Phoenix soil analysis. NASA on Thursday said the redesign of its proposed moon rocket will be about 20 feet longer than an earlier design and have six main engines at its base. Engineers also say the new design will hold more fuel and more supplies than earlier models. Jun 26, 2008

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on Tuesday approved legislation that would allow NASA to make an additional shuttle mission. A similar version of the bill passed in the House last week, but the White House has indicated that it may veto legislation authorizing an additional flight. Jun 25, 2008

NASA officials said they expect to lose up to 4,000 jobs at the shuttle launching site when the program ends in two years. The agency expects to eliminate as many as 7,000 shuttle jobs but said a new exploration program will create about 3,000 positions. Jun 24, 2008

NASA's Jupiter 120 rocket could reduce the five-year gap in U.S. human spaceflight when the space shuttle retires in 2010, but the agency remains committed to the Ares rocket, observers say.
