AVIC Commercial Aircraft
China is making final preparations for the launch of its "jumbo aircraft" manufacturing company, which is scheduled to begin operations in Shanghai this month. China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council will be the controlling shareholder of the new entity. Other stakeholders include AVIC I and AVIC II--which will hold the second-largest stake jointly--the Shanghai local government, Baosteel Group and Aluminum Corp. of China. Mar 6, 2008

China to launch jumbo jet manufacturing company. A new Chinese jumbo aircraft manufacturing company is scheduled to start operating in Shanghai later this month. Chief Designer Wu Guanghui described producing a new plane as a "long process," and cited technical bottlenecks, marketing issues, and the lack of an MRO support system. Mar 6, 2008
AVIC Commercial Aircraft
Speculation is that AVIC Commercial Aircraft ARJ21 Chief Designer Wu Guanghui will hold the same role for the large commercial passenger aircraft. Although he said he is confident in the program's future. Xi'an Aircraft Manufacturing Co. VP Meng Xiangkai agreed with Wu, noting that he will propose legislation at an annual congressional conference this week that will guarantee "continuous and stable development of the jumbo aircraft until it achieves commercial success." Wu also called on Beijing to provide long-term financial support to the program. So far, the Chinese government has allocated CNY50-CNY60 billion ($7.03-$8.43 billion) toward production of large military and commercial aircraft and engines. Mar 6, 2008
Cathay Pacific Airways, Boeing
Cathay Pacific Airways added 12 aircraft last year, including the first five of 30 Boeing 777-300ERs on firm order. Cathay Pacific added its sixth 747-400BCF and expects another this year. In May it will start taking delivery of six new 747-400ERFs. Mar 6, 2008
Enigma, Korean Air, Airbus, Boeing
Enigma said Korean Air selected its InService MRO and Oracle Complex MRO solutions to streamline maintenance operations across its fleet of A300, A330, 737, 747 and 777 aircraft. Features include comprehensive airframe, engine and component maintenance data as well as troubleshooting, repair and reporting capacities. Mar 4, 2008
Kaman
Australia cancels helicopter contract, cites safety issues. Australia has canceled a contract to buy 11 Navy Seasprite helicopters from Connecticut-based Kaman Corp. Australian officials said the aircraft's crashworthiness and airworthiness "were not up to 21st century standards." A Kaman spokesman was not immediately available to discuss the safety issues. Mar 5, 2008 Singapore Airlines, Airbus Singapore Airlines took delivery of the third production A380 (MSN006) Saturday at the Toulouse factory in France. The Rolls-Royce Trent 900-powered, 471-seat big fat jet is expected to arrive in Singapore on Wednesday, March 12 and its addition to the fleet would allow it to begin A380 flights to London Heathrow starting Tuesday March 18, the airline said in a statement. Singapore Airlines, the first and currently the only airline to fly the A380, operates daily scheduled flights of the aircraft between Singapore and Sydney. The airline has firm orders for a further 16 A380s and options on six more, the statement said. Mar 8, 2008
Tiger Airways
Tiger Airways will add two leased A319s this year and a fifth A320 in April to its Australian operation, growing seat capacity 65%, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation reported. The 144-seat A319s will afford Tiger access to airports with shorter runways. CEO Tony Davis said the announcement of its second Australian base after Melbourne is due within three months.
