Singapore plans a fourth terminal at Changi airport to meet rising travel demand in Asia, the government said on Thursday. The government is working on a master plan for the new terminal, said Minister of Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua in the city-state's parliament, without giving further details. The airport's third terminal was opened in January, boosting Changi's passenger capacity by around 45 percent to 70 million, as airports throughout Asia expand to gear up for predictions of strong growth in regional travel. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore also said it was starting an expansion project at Changi's budget airline terminal, to more than double its capacity by early 2009 to capitalize on planned air liberalization in Southeast Asia. Singapore is competing against Hong Kong and Bangkok to be the region's top aviation hub. Mar 6, 2008

Singapore's Budget Terminal scheduled for upgrade. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore yesterday announced March 6 a S$10 million ($7.2 million) expansion project at Changi Airport's Budget Terminal scheduled to begin in July. The seven-gate facility, which opened in March 2006 and caters to LCCs (Airport Equipment & Technology, Summer 2006), will be enlarged to 28,700 sq. m. from 25,000 and boost annual passenger capacity to 7 million from 2.7 million. CAAS said approximately 1.8 million passengers used the terminal in 2007. Tiger Airways and Cebu Pacific Air operated 248 flights last month to 20 destinations. Work will include the addition of seven new check-in counters, three passenger gates and new baggage handling equipment. It is scheduled to be finished in early 2009. Mar 6, 2008
