Brussels Airlines said on Tuesday it was in talks with various partners to enter one of the world's main commercial airline alliances and keeping the door open for a possible stake sale to a new shareholder. "A possible financial participation of a new shareholder could only be considered under the condition that the sustainable future, the identity and the autonomy of Brussels Airlines are guaranteed," the carrier said in a statement. Reports in the Belgian and German press quoting industry sources said German airline Lufthansa was considering buying Brussels Airlines. "As to the rumours that are currently circulating on the issue of consolidation in air traffic, the company will abstain from further comments," Brussels Airlines said. Apr 30, 2008

Brussels Airlines yesterday acknowledged that it is negotiating an alliance membership, although it declined to comment on rumors that it was discussing possible acquisition by Lufthansa. "A possible financial participation of a new shareholder could only be considered under the condition that the sustainable future, the identity and the autonomy of Brussels Airlines are guaranteed," it said in a statement, while Lufthansa CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber told shareholders at the company's AGM, "So far I have heard speculation that we are going to merge with everyone except for Air France KLM."
