Best seller is honoured

Best seller Alan Plater is to be awarded an honorary doctorate from The Open University.

Plater is one of the country's best-loved writers of stage and screen. His career spans five decades with many credits for theatre, radio, film and television.

The writer, born in Jarrow, South Tyneside, was behind such TV favourites as Z Cars and When The Boat Comes In.

He also wrote The Beiderbecke Trilogy, A Very British Coup, Close the Coalhouse Door, Shooting the Legend.

Most recently he has written for Newcastle's Live Theatre, Tales From The Backyard.

Plater has also just enjoyed sell-out success at the Live Theatre with Charlie's Trousers - a comic look at modern art and its role in the North East.
