BBC big names to join strike
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), May 18, 2005
Some of the North East's most famous faces and voices will be going out on strike next week in protest against proposed job cuts at the BBC.
BBC Radio Newcastle's Mike Parr, Look North's Carol Malia and weather presenter Trai Anfield are among the staff who will support the strike on Monday.
The National Union of Journalists and BECTU union members are carrying out the 24-hour strike over the BBC's threat to close or "outsource" 3,780 posts nationwide by 2008.
They will hold a demonstration at Newcastle's Monument from noon until 2pm to raise awareness.
NUJ mother of chapel Brid Fitzpatrick said: "Around one in five jobs will go in TV and radio in the North East if these cuts go ahead.
"At a time when ITV is cutting back on its regional output, we think it's vital the BBC keeps its strong local base."
