Ram-raid jewel thief killed
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 7, 2005
A suspected jewel thief was killed in a police chase after a ram raid on a high-class jewellers.
The suspect died after being run over by an unmarked police car in Cadogan Square, central London, following a high-speed chase from the jewellers, Tiffany & Co, in fashionable Sloane Square yesterday.
Another man, who was also riding on the moped, was injured. A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers taking part in a pre-planned operation were in place outside of the store and saw five suspects with a 4x4 vehicle ram a window.
"Officers intervened and the five made off, one in the 4x4 and two each on a motorcycle and a moped," said the spokesman.
"The moped was in collision with a parked car and the men are understood to have fallen into the road."
They were then hit by the car, he said. One died and the other is critically ill in hospital.
Three men were later arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Tiffany & Co was founded in New York in 1837 and its Fifth Avenue store was immortalised in the Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast At Tiffany's in 1961.
