Saab showing smart thinking
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 13, 2006
The Swedes are an inventive lot, turning out distinctive cars that combine serious performance with practicality.
Saab has a rallying pedigree, combined with a safety DNA liked by buyers.
But these attributes and the robust construction of the car were not enough to keep abreast with the smart-looking competition.
So, out went the beefy, sturdy look of yesteryear to be replaced by a much more modern and sophisticated range.
The 9-5 range benefited greatly. For a start, most of the metal work from the windscreen forward is new and Saab claim 1,367 changes were involved.
But it's not just the grille and lights that have been tweaked, the makeover involves some nice styling touches at the back, too.
Driving the flagship Aero Estate, revealed that despite the makeover, the car still offers considerable muscle and musters power instantly.
With a fairly hefty shell to lug around, the 2.3-litre engine guarantees an athletic response. A superboost unleashes extra oomph projecting the Aero to 60mph in under seven seconds.
This sporty estate combines a pliant ride with excellent body control and for such a large car, it handles well.
Saab's superb ride is not compromised, despite the stiffer sports suspension, and the steering feels nicely weighted without being hefty in town.
Inside, ergonomics take top billing for cosseted travel, with excellent steering alignment, superb, supportive seating and user-friendly cockpit-like instrument panel.
Luggage space is generous with 890 litres being expanded to 2,000 litres when rear seats are folded.
