We're doing it, and so can you

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), April 17, 2007

A host of companies, organisations and councils have backed our campaign. Here they explain why it is so important

Sarah Stewart, director of Newcastle Science City: Newcastle Science City is a partnership between three core partners - Newcastle University, the city council and One NorthEast - which aims to help establish the whole of the North East as one of the world's premier locations for the integration of science, business and economic development.

Energy, how much we use, where we get it from and how we generate more with maximum efficiency are already amongst the key issues of the new millennium, and Energy & The Environment is one of the key themes on which Science City is concentrating.

Trevor Mann, SVP of manufacturing, purchasing and supply chain management at Nissan: We're delighted to support Go Green - and it couldn't have come at a better time for us.

Globally, Nissan has launched its Nissan Green Program 2010 which will help our staff around the world focus on being more environmentally-friendly - both our vehicles and our day to day operations.

Our plant in Sunderland is the biggest car producer in the UK, and with that comes a great responsibility.

During the campaign, you will be able to read about some of our environmental achievements and initiatives, both here at the plant, and across the globe. As we hope you will discover, there is a lot more going on inside Nissan than just making cars.

Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus: If you want a less stressful journey and a greener lifestyle then public transport provides the answer - it's miles better for the environment.

You can travel door-to-door or let us meet you halfway with park-and-ride on Metro or bus.

Nexus is pleased to support the Chronicle's Go Green campaign to show how the little things we can all do will make a big difference.

Graeme Mason, planning, development and facilities manager at Newcastle International Airport: Newcastle International Airport is delighted to be a partner in Go Green.

Never has the issue of climate change been so important. Rarely a day goes by without environmental issues making headline news, and the role played by airports and aviation is central to the current political debate

Stewardship of the environment is top of our agenda here at Newcastle International. We take very seriously the impact that our activities have on the local, national and global environment.

Whilst we fully support the continued growth of the aviation industry, we are also committed to its sustainable development and to the mitigation of our impact on climate change.

Andy Clayson, Head of CSR: At Sage, we are passionate about the environment. This is why we remain determined to make a difference.

We continually strive to consider the environment and have already introduced initiatives, including reducing business travel by installing video conferencing facilities; providing cycle racks, and the use of glass throughout our building reduces our use of artificial lighting. We are reducing the amount of paper included when we distribute our software and our package sizes. All this means reducing our environmental footprint.

Mark Armstrong, project manager of Midas: Midas, a programme set up to help companies reduce their environmental impact, is sponsoring Go Green to help raise awareness of environmental issues and highlight the support available to companies.

The North East has been hit hard by recent rises in energy costs and the increase in environmental legislation which has been blamed for factory closures. We want to show there are measures people can take both at home and in business to take control of the issues. There has recently been a lot of publicity surrounding climate change but there is still some confusion over what individuals can actually do - we feel Go Green will help demonstrate practical actions that everyone can do.

Coun Bill Brooks, leader of Northumberland County Council: We are backing the Go Green campaign 100%. This will play a massive role in demonstrating how simple, day to day choices can make a big difference to the environment.

We have grown up in a throwaway society but we have to change our approach for future generations. We all have to do our bit - and Go Green will give loads of ideas.

We are set to be one of the UK's greenest counties in how we deal with waste, but we need the continuing support and commitment of householders and businesses to achieve this aim.

John Clough MBE, eaga chief executive: Evidence that climate change is happening and of the devastating impact it could have on the world is overwhelming. The good news is that through making simple changes to our lifestyle and homes we can all help protect our environment.

As the leading provider of residential energy efficiency solutions in the UK, eaga is helping thousands of homeowners reduce their carbon emissions and their fuel bills.

Working with government, local authorities, housing associations and the private sector we have helped make more than 5 million homes across the UK energy efficient.
