Helping hand for Chinese students
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), May 17, 2007
Five Northumbria University international students are the latest recipients of scholarships made possible thanks to a North East businessman.
The five, all from the People's Republic of China, will each receive pounds 1,000 from a scholarship fund established in 2005 by Mr Sin Hung Ng, a former governor of Northumbria University.
Mr Ng is originally from Guangdong Province in China. He said: "I wanted to encourage Chinese students to come to Northumbria University, where they will receive an excellent education.
"But I also wanted to remind them to work hard while they are here to ensure they get the best results they can.
"Hopefully these scholarships will meet both aims."
The Hung Ng scholarships are open to students from China in their first year at Northumbria, and are offered each year to support five students who come to the university with outstanding records of academic achievement.
This year's chosen five are Zhenzhen Tan, studying international business management, Shi Kang, studying business management, Zhu Haihan, studying communication & electronic engineering, Lui Yang, studying transportation design and Liu Xin, studying applied linguistics.
Lui Yang, 19, has come to Northumbria from Tsinghua University's Academy of Art and Design, China. Tsinghua is considered to be China's mostly highly ranked university. Northumbria's School of Design works closely with Tsinghua, and students can undertake a foundation programme to prepare them for study in the UK.
He said: "I am really to pleased have been selected for the Hung Ng scholarship, as it is a nice reward for my hard study and gives me a sense of confidence for the future.
"I will use the money to buy equipment for project work.!
