Letter: YOUR SHOUT - We live in a free society
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Sept 22, 2007
Byline: AP
I WOULD like to respond to the letter by Jack Bullock headed Military Ape Antics Have No Place (Your Shout, September 20) who raises one or two interesting points on national pride and British history.
Some I agree with, others I don't. But, what the heck, we live in a free society, don't we? As far as comments made by the BBC on the reasons for the Second World War are concerned, I personally consider the BBC to be anti-British and far too politically correct. But again, that is only my opinion. Some people will agree, others will disagree with me. Suppose we had not gone to war in 1939 and Hitler had conquered the world. Does anyone think for one minute I would be writing this letter? Not on your life!
Getting back to national pride, I can honestly say I am proud to be British but ashamed and disappointed at what Britain has become. We may be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but at what cost? We are only a service industry nation. What little manufacturing we do have is mostly owned by the countries we fought against.
And when you look at the politicians we have elected to run our country, and the one we haven't elected, Gordon Brown, on behalf of Brussels, well, they don't really give us much of a reason to have any national pride do they?
A P, Prudhoe.
