Villagers muck in and clean up

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), April 21, 2008

IT WAS a clean sweep all round in Lanchester, County Durham, in this Chronicle archive picture from April, 1986. The chairman of the parish council, Jack Tulip, with barrow, secretary John Richardson and other councillors, plus members of the Red Cross, Brownies, youth clubs, Boys' Brigade, Guides, Lions Club and villagers turned up with brooms, brushes, dust pans and plastic bags to have a massive sweep through the village.

Coun Derek Iceton said: "The village has been entered in a tidy village competition to be judged over the next few months.

"We are having a best-kept garden contest as well as a tidy village painting competition for the children and hope to get everyone in the village to help us win."
