Robot to stage a great show

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), April 3, 2008

THE world's most advanced humanoid robot will make its UK debut in a bid to inspire the next generation of engineers.

The latest version of Honda's ASIMO is capable of running at 4mph, walking forward and backward, climbing stairs, pushing a trolley and carrying objects.

Honda's goal is to one day produce a robot capable of assisting those who lack full mobility and of working in environments dangerous to humans.

It will be in the region for three days at the Youth Engineering Summit (YES), being held at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring, in June.

YES provides chances for around 7,000 Year Seven and Eight students to learn about the importance of engineering in modern life and appreciate the range of career options available in this field.

Groups, including One North East, the North East Productivity Alliance (NEPA) and the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), are backing the show in the North East with the aim to make it an annual event.
