Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), August 14, 2008

MATHS whizz Daniel Finlay landed himself a place at Oxford University today.

Daniel was among the high-flyers opening their results at Hirst High School in Ashington.

He gained three As in Maths, Further Maths and Business Studies as well as a B in French and a B at AS level in Spanish.

Daniel, 18, from Ashington, was offered a place at St Ann's College, Oxford, on the strength of his success in his A levels and interviews at the university.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to studying Maths at Oxford. I want to become a teacher."

Lesley Craig, headteacher at Hirst High, said: "We are delighted for Daniel and the other students who have done so well this year."

The A to E grade pass rate was 90%. And the average point score per student increased from 548 last year to 611 this year.

Other top-scoring students today are Sandip Sanghera, who got A in English, B in History and C at ICT.

She will now be studying Law at Newcastle University.
