Panic attacks; In association with the NHS North of Tyne

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Dec 15, 2008

PANIC and heart attacks may be more closely linked than is generally realised, research suggests.

The symptoms of a panic attack can be frighteningly similar to those of a heart attack, including chest pains, as well as sweating, trembling and shortness of breath.

New research has indicated possible connections between panic attacks and both heart disease and heart attacks, especially among young patients.

A British study of 404,654 people found those diagnosed as suffering from panic attacks or panic disorder had a significantly greater chance of developing heart disease.

The association was more marked for individuals who were aged under 50 when identified as having a panic attack problem.

Younger people also had a higher risk of heart attacks.

Study leader Dr Kate Walters, a senior lecturer in primary care at University College London, said: "The symptoms closely mimic those of a heart attack and our findings have significant implications."
