Mystery illness

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), July 26, 2008

A COMMON cold nearly killed a teenager.

Paige Richardson, 17, of Biddick Hall, South Shields, had been studying for her A-levels when she picked-up a cough.

Throughout the next few weeks she began to vomit, lost weight and became short of breath.

She was finally taken to South Tyneside Hospital.

The youngster was diagnosed with pneumonia and was given daily injections and oxygen before she was allowed home in a wheelchair.

Paige said: "Doctors didn't know what was wrong, but said I almost died. I was lucky."
