Euro city quest
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), July 5, 2008
A NORTH East MEP claims a permanent home for the European Parliament would save the taxpayer thousands of pounds.
Fiona Hall says relocating to Brussels, permanently would save time and money and help the EU reach its carbon emissions target by scrapping the current journeys between the Belgian city and Strasbourg.
Currently 732 MEPs and 2,000 assistants make the trip between the two cities every month, costing more than pounds 140m.
Now other MEPs are backing Mrs Hall's suggestion.
She said: "The European Parliament needs to work more efficiently and ending the constant tug of war between Strasbourg and Brussels would do the trick.
"It is now the responsibility of the national governments to halt this needless cost and waste and put the money saved to better use."
