The Illness

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), June 18, 2008

DUCHENNE muscular dystrophy is one of more than 20 types of the condition.

Caused by a gene fault, it leads to progressive muscle weakness.

The Duchenne type affects mainly boys. Most affected boys develop the first signs of difficulty in walking between the ages of one and three.

Aged eight to 11, sufferers become unable to walk. They can expect to live only until their late teens or early 20s.

About 100 boys with the condition are born in the UK yearly.
