Modern classic is even better; Subaru Impreza revamp should win new fans Subaru fans are being offered a breathtaking car with the new Impreza. ANDY RICHARDS has been drinking it

When you set about revamping a legendary speed demon, it's a big task to win a host of new driving fans.

But these guys have done it with the new Impreza.

They are labelling it an icon reborn - and driving the latest Impreza confirms the boast.

Not only that, but in some cases the new models are cheaper than the old.

For instance, a limited number of the Impreza 2.5 WRX went on sale in November at only pounds 19,995 on the road.

That worked out at pounds 1,102 less than the previous model.

The range-topper, the Impreza 2.5 WRX STI, launched this spring, is pounds 24,995 - pounds 1,600 less than the old one.

So, not only are Impreza fans being offered a breathtaking new car, they are getting a real deal financially.

Particularly when you bear in mind the impressive standard spec. This includes all-wheel drive, alloy wheels and climate control air conditioning. There are various airbags and the brake pedal is energy-absorbing, being designed to snap away under severe impact to protect the lower limbs.

The exterior good looks offer further pedestrian protection.

There is a more rounded contour to the top of the front bumper, a gently curved bonnet and windscreen wipers which collapse, softening any impact.

The new Impreza 2.5 WRX manages to look sporty and yet has a definite family feel about it.

Its wide tracks, broad shoulder lines and subtle side body creases give it a punchy, aggressive look.

Most models are lighter than their predecessors and enjoy improved aerodynamics.

All new Imprezas share a fivedoor body which is shorter and wider than the previous Sport Wagon.

There is noticeably more interior space and this is thanks, in part, to a 95mm longer wheelbase .

Interior width is also around 45mm greater, while a compact new multi-link rear suspension allows a wider and more useable luggage area.

The instrument panel is clear and practical and enhances the sporty feel. It has subtle lighting and the whole vehicle information display is easy on the eye.

And, of course, the Impreza almost flies when you want it to.

My test car's renowned 2.5-litre 'boxer' engine was more efficient than ever, offering a much gutsier throttle response in normal driving conditions.

Torque has improved and translates into much livelier acceleration.
