Band's aid
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Nov 1, 2008
A MEMORIAL concert for a man who saved a Tyneside brass band from collapse has raised more than pounds 500 for charity.
The Dunston Silver Band, based in Gateshead, started in 1902 but faced closure in the 1980s, until Mattie Bell came to the rescue in 1987.
Since then, Mr Bell, who died in May, played in the band and was its chairman, secretary and treasurer.
The band held a tribute concert for Mr Bell at St Mark's Methodist Church, Gateshead, in October, raising pounds 550 for Diabetes UK.
