I have learned lesson: Lewis
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 10, 2008
LEWIS HAMILTON is confident he has learned from his mistakes of last year as the Briton looks to close in on a maiden world championship title with victory at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver conquered the rain on the Fuji Speedway circuit last season to secure victory and build a 12-point lead over nearest rival and then team-mate Fernando Alonso with just two races remaining.
The title was his to lose and he did just that, first crashing out in China and then collecting just two points in Brazil.
Instead the world championship went to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton is determined to ensure something similar does not happen this year.
He said: "I was leading here but I didn't really understand the magnitude of the situation I was in, and what was around me and the pressure that was on my shoulders. I dealt with it the best I could, but it wasn't the best.
"But I learnt from those mistakes and I have come this year and I've taken a big step in my life as a grown-up, while as a driver I have matured and worked as hard as I can to improve in all areas.
"I didn't really focus on the championship last year whereas this year I have, as well as the importance of finishing races."
Hamilton admitted to feeling the nerves as the season reached its climax last year, but he believes the experience he has since gained means he feels far more relaxed before each race.
Once again this season is set for an exciting finish, with Ferrari's Felipe Massa trailing Hamilton by just seven points.
"It is no easier this year, in fact I think it is even harder," said Hamilton.
"Last year it appeared to be easier to maintain the position I was in whereas this year it has been more of challenge.
"But you have to step up your game."
