Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 2, 2008

THE Great North Run is the world's biggest half-marathon.

Founded by former Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist Brendan Foster, the first GNR took place on 28 June 1981.

This year about 52,000 people are due to start the race and run the 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields.

Among the runners will be former Olympic medallist Kriss Akabusi, BBC sport commentator Ray Stubbs, model and TV presenter Nell McAndrew and BBC weather forecaster Isobel Lang.

This year the Great North Run will celebrate its millionth entrant. Leanne Symonds from Cramlington is the millionth person to enter since the first event took place.

The average age of Great North Runners is 35 years and 7 months.
