Green city slicker; Her view

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 24, 2008

SPORTY looks, a lively spirit, impressive packaging and low running costs earn Toyota's latest Yaris high praise.

What's not so hot is the price tag, a weird digital display and high levels of road and wind noise .

The overall picture is good though.

The Yaris Mk2 may be smaller than most of its rivals but it is perfectly formed to achieve amazing interior space.

It is only 11cm longer than the earlier model but creates an ample cabin area. But generosity in the rear isn't at the cost of luggage space. With the reclining seats upright, there is up to 363 litres capacity. Fold the EasyFlat rear seats to the floor and the boot area offers an impressive 737 litres.

The 1.4-litre diesel burner won't blow you away but it feels spritely enough, reaching 62mph in 10.7 seconds. The steering is light and breezy in town, where the compact Yaris is a cinch to park.

It looks thoroughly modern but the pounds 11,645 price is high compared to the cost of some rivals. But with a credit crunch-beating combined fuel return of 63mpg and some of the lowest running costs in its sector it will attract bargain hunters who want a 'green machine' with style, and attitude.
