Letter: Moment of fame; Remember When

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 7, 2008

I READ your article about the Club A-gogo in a previous Remember When and thought this piece might tickle your readers' fancy.

It was 1962 and my friends and I, who were frequent visitors to the Club A-gogo, were 17 years old.

We heard that one night there was to be a canny band playing, so we got there early to get as near to the tiny stage as possible.

As the evening progressed there was a crowd around the stage about eight to 10 deep and we were in the front (what about fire regulations?).

By this time my friend, Theresa, was feeling claustrophobic and panicky.

The band came on and when they started to play the crowd pushed forward with excitement and my friend fainted.

We were unable to get her back through the crowd so she had to be lifted on to the corner of the stage on to a chair where she remained conscious but fragile for the whole of the set.

The band were not impressed but had no choice but to put up with her presence. At one point the lead singer flung his jacket at Theresa, presumably to hold on to it for him.

She was not impressed and flung it back. At the end of the session we were able to rescue her.

The band was the Rolling Stones.

Years later we wished Theresa had kept Mick Jagger's jacket so we could sell it on Ebay.

My friend Theresa died a few years ago and when I think about her I frequently think about that time and how she was a member of the Rolling Stones band for one night. This true story is in memory of Theresa.
