Trusted worker took pounds 2,000

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England),  Sept 12, 2008

A TRUSTED worker stole from her bosses when she faced a Christmas cash crisis.

Elizabeth Convery, who has eight grandchildren, was desperate for money to buy presents and pay her bills.

The 52-year-old had only recently been hired as accounts officer manager for North East based A1 Blinds.

And she used her position to siphon more than pounds 2,000 of company cash into her own account, Newcastle Crown Court heard. "Her activities came to light in February when police were called in by the company's operations manager," said Tony Glover, prosecuting.

The defendant admitted the amounts she had taken.

She told police: "I had a lot of debt. It was Christmas and I have just been stupid".

Convery, of Moffatt Avenue, Jarrow, was given a 12-month community order with 100 hours unpaid work after admitting fraud.

She was also ordered to pay back the pounds 2,017 she stole.

Judge David Hodson told her "It is very sad to see a woman of your age and with no previous convictions in the dock of the crown court. You have lost your good name and you have lost your previous good character."
