School scoops third award

CULTURE vultures at a Tyneside primary are set to score a hat trick For the third time, St Joseph's RC Primary in Blaydon, Gateshead, is set to scoop an international award for educating pupils about other cultures.

The school is one of 63 nationwide to win the International School Award.

It was selected for bringing the wider world into the classroom including forging links with schools in France, Finland, Ireland and Portugal.

Recent projects looked at how Christmas is celebrated across the world, changing global weather patterns and life in an Indian village.

The school's International Schools Coordinator Tony Hannah will receive the award on March 27 from BBC correspondent Fergal Keane.

Coun Catherine Donovan, cabinet member for children and young people at Gateshead Council, said: "This third ISA award is an amazing achievement and testament to the hard work that has gone in to ensuring that pupils at St Joseph's have a mature understanding of diversity."
