We will keep promises says top Tory Hague
FORMER Tory leader William Hague went walkabout in Slaithwaite yesterday.
He was in the area to support Maggie Throup's campaign to oust Labour's Kali Mountford in the Colne Valley.
While meeting people on the streets of Slaithwaite he was quizzed about everything from pensions to the war in Iraq.
One man even asked him if he was looking for the nearest real ale pub.
Speaking to the Examiner, Mr Hague said people were ready for a change.
"People who have not traditionally voted Conservative are going to on May 5," said Mr Hague.
"Under Michael Howard the party is making promises it can and will keep. This is a much closer election than the last two and that is because Labour are getting weaker and we are getting stronger."
He also visited Grosvenor Chemicals, in Manchester Road, where he spoke to site director George Randall about the issues facing industry.
"A Tory Government would cut back the amount of legislation imposed on industry from Europe," he said.
"All the rules and regulations are crippling business in this country. In the past eight years business has really suffered under Tony Blair's Government - the only way to make things better is at the ballot box."
Mr Hague also visited Dewsbury Town Hall where he met candidate Sayeeda Warsi.
