Green for goal

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), Nov 8, 2006

Liz green was in unstoppable goalscoring form as Lockwood Park Dragons second string beat York University 9-0 in the Northern Counties Women's Hockey League.

The students were given a lesson in finishing by the Dragons captain and striker who netted eight goals in this comprehensive victory.

Lisa Middleton opened the scoring for the Dragons but from then on it was a one-woman show as Green capitalised on the excellent team-work of her colleagues to grab a first-half hat trick.

But that was only a foretaste of what was to come as Green rattled the backboard five more times in the second half to complete the rout and keep their unbeaten record and top spot in their Division.

Team:Vernon, Parkin, Smeaton, Benson, Webber, Bidwell, Middleton, Bailey, Sharpe, Longstaff, Green.

Lockwood Park Dragons 2 Driffield 5

LOCKWOOD Park Dragons were fired up and brimming with confidence as they took on Driffield following the previous week's victory over Northern Counties Hockey League Division I leaders Broom. But that boost quickly turned to disaster as the visitors to Lockwood scored on the break to grab a 5-2 victory. On current form Park should have been good for the points against a side well below them in the division, but although playing good attacking hockey they failed to take their chances and Driffield showed them how. In the first minute the visitors intercepted a pass and broke away to score. Park then played some excellent hockey and should have scored but Driffield showed how it should be done and rattled in another three before the break. With a mountain to climb Dragons played with more determination but failed to find the form of the previous week, although they netted twice through Nicki Turner and Amanda Sowerby. But Driffield had the last word with a late effort.

Team:Hodgson, Hall, Gerrard, Davies, Crossland, Fillignham, Armitage, Sawyer, Cowdell, Sowerby, Dexter, Hough, Turner.

DRAGONS also maintained their 100% record to stay top of Division VI. They began well but despite all their possession they couldn't find their goalscoring touch. After the break, however, they found their way and Katie Hampshire scored with a well-taken goal. This seemed to spur the team on and Gwen Thomas added a second and Hampshire made the points safe with a third. Hester Longstaff had a good game in midfield while Leanne Monchuck won the player-of-the-match award for her best game of the season.

Team:Davison, Carter, Dunne, McCallum, Bates, Monchuck, Brown, Longstaff, Hampshire, Mallinson, McEwan, Luxford, Roberts.

Huddersfield 5 Halifax 4

THE first team bounced back from 4-1 down to snatch a tremendous Yorkshire Premier League victory in this derby match. Both sides have made excellent starts with Halifax second and Huddersfield third in the table, but last season Halifax completed a double over their neighbours. And another defeat looked on the cards as Halifax stormed into a 4-1 lead despite Huddersfield scoring first after only 45 seconds when a well-worked move finished with Steve Durrans scoring from close range. Halifax were soon back on level terms and then took control as Huddersfield made errors which allowed the visitors to Lockwood Park to go in 4-1 up. Huddersfield again started quickly and Durrans made it 4-2 after only 30 seconds play. A brilliant move was then finished by Greg Moorhouse to make it 4-3 and Halifax had hardly touched the ball. Clem Gregory levelled the scores and then Rob Kelly rounded off a superb comeback with the winner.

Team:Baillie, Townend, Christie, Hannam, Gibson, Gregory, Kelly, Courtney, Durrans, Elson, Kaye. Subs: Chowdry, Moorhouse.
