Football: Rookie Sheldon aiming to shine

ROOKIE Huddersfield boxer Nathan Sheldon aims to make his mark on the national stage tonight.

The 16-year-old from Primrose Hill takes part in the 57 kilo final of the Junior Novices Championships at Wythenshawe, near Manchester.

The tournament is for those who have competed in less than10bouts at the time of entering.

Sheldon is coached by John Chapman at the University of Huddersfield Amateur Boxing Club, which has been running for six years and is open to non-students.

He has fought his way through from the regional stages.

His current record is six wins and one loss.

While Sheldon beat Shaun Godwin, of the Horsley Hill club on Tyneside, in the semi-finals, also at Wythenshawe, clubmate Ismail Anwar suffered the misery of a last-four defeat.

He lost out to Carl Burcher, from the Ever ton Red Triangle club in Liverpool.

Another University of Huddersfield ABC fighter, Alistair Warren, won through the first stage of the Senior Novices by outpointing Shaun Skill from Sheffield's Woodseats ABC at 68 kilos.

But Adam Lindley lost out to Samed Fedaye, from Huddersfield's other club Rawthorpe, at 57 kilos.

Fedaye now fights Zahid Maqsood, from One Nation ABC in Derby, for a place in the semi-finals.

Rawthorpe's AdamSykes, 13, was a winner at the Halifax ABC show.
