Sportsmen back 'Safety First'

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), April 15, 2008

FARTOWN'S Australian winger Lionel Cooper and Town coach Alf Young attended a road safety exhibition organised by the Chief Constable of Huddersfield, James Chadwick, in the showroom of BrockholesMotor Co Ltd of East Parade.

The emphas is of the Chief Constable's speech was on the need for observance of safety measures by which the number of road accidents, locally and nationally, could be reduced.

Stressing the advisability of motorists submitting their cars for frequent maintenance checks, he said tests carried out recently by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research showed that travelling at 30mph, fewer than one in 10 cars currently on the road could be stopped in 45ft, which was the distance within which a car should be halted if the brakes were in good condition.

One in two required 75ft in which to stop and one in 10 could not stop in 100ft.

"This is a deplorable state of affairs," he said.

Clr Brook urged all road users to keep in mind the three Cs - consideration, concentration and courtesy.

The exhibition contained cut-away working models of all car parts, a braking response machine and a series of police photographs and charts dealing with recent accidents.
