Austen's good fortune

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE opens with one of the most famous lines in literature: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife".

The novel was originally titled First Impressions, and was written between October 1796 and August 1797.

It has been filmed an on TV many times, most notably the 1995 BBC version starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth In August 2008, a San Francisco theatre company presented Pride and Succubus, a comedy that merged Jane Austen with Buffy the Vampire Slayer casting Elizabeth as an 18th-century vampire slayer.

In 2003 it came second behind The Lord of the Rings in the BBC poll "UK's Best-Loved B ook"
