Nurse to make Barnsley debut

TOP Huddersfield boxing prospect Tyrone Nurse will make his professional debut at Barnsley next month.

The 18-year-old is being trained by dad Chris Aston, the man who helped mould Huddersfield's trio of title winners Mark Hobson, James Hare and Dale Robinson.

And Aston hopes his 18-year-old son, who was a leading amateur with the Parson's Cross club in Sheffield, will lead a new wave of success in the town.

Nurse, who will fight at lightweight, the same division as Amir Khan, has already caught the eye of experienced Mancunian fighter Michael Gomez.

The pair have been sparring in readiness for their upcoming bouts, Nurse taking on a yet-to-be-named opponent at the Sky-televised show at the Metrodome on Friday, March 28 and Gomez facing Lee McAllister for the WBU lightweight crown in Aberdeen the night after.

"Gomez was complimentary about Tyrone, whose style I believe is well suited to the pro game," said Aston, who is teaming up with promoter Steve Wood to push the careers of Nurse and Dewsbury super-featherweight Gary Sykes.

"Steve Wood, who is becoming pretty prominent in British boxing, has good contacts with Frank Maloney, who is behind the Barnsley show, and it's a great chance for both Tyrone and Gary to catch the eye."

Top of the bill at Barnsley will be the British super-flyweight title clash between Chris Edwards and Andy Bell.
