'I was broke so I tried to steal diesel at quarry firm'
Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), July 10, 2008
A MAN who admitted trying to steal diesel fuel said he did it because he was broke.
David Stevenson was caught as he tried to steal the fuel from a quarry firm.
Police later discovered he had been driving without insurance or a full licence.
Stevenson, 38, of Raven Street, Ravensthorpe, pleaded guilty to three offences at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Defending himself, Stevenson said: "I was flat broke and I did a stupid thing.
"It was the first time and Iwon't be doing it ever again."
The court was told he tried to steal the diesel from the James Holgate quarry in Huddersfield.
Magistrates put Stevenson under a curfew from 7pm to 7am for eight weeks.
He was also fined pounds 50 and ordered to pay court costs of pounds 60 and a pounds 15 victim surcharge.
