Cat risk for eczema families
Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), June 24, 2008
COUPLES expecting their first baby should think twice about owning a cat if eczema runs in their family, a study suggests.
The findings, published in the journal PLoS (Public Library of Science) Medicine, says the combination of cat exposure and an inherited defective gene can increase a new born infant's chances of the skin allergy.
Eczema runs in families and is linked to faults in the gene that produces filaggrin (FLG), a protective protein in the skin.
