A second Prom and it's all for free
Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), June 27, 2008
THERE will be no need for fingers crossed for fine weather for Slaith waite Philharmonic Orchestra's Summer Prom tomorrow night.
The orchestra will be indoors, on stage at Huddersfield Town Hall for a free concert packed with good music and one which the BBC have decided to record.
Radio Three's project, Play To The Nation focuses on amateur music-making in Britain.
The venture is being undertaken by the BBC in partnership with Making Music, the National Association of amateur and semiprofessional musicians.
For the whole of October, Radio 3will follow every professional concert broadcast during its Performance on 3 slot with a performance by an amateur group.
The project kicks off on October 1with special recordings by the BBC which will include tomorrow's Slaithwaite Philharmonic Prom concert.
The orchestra is also delighted to welcome back the popular soprano Victoria Sharp who will sing in the closing Prom's favourites of Rule Britannia and Jerusalem. Victoria returns after several successful appearances with the Slaithwaite orchestra, most recently in the title role of Verdi's opera Aida in June last year.
The concert also features violinist Emily Steinitz who will play the Barber Violin Concerto and is also the featured soloist in Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The conductor is John Anderson, the music starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets for the concert are free and a full house is expected so get yours in advance from the Albion Street Information Centre on 01484 223200.
And as a bonus, how about seeing a second concert, or at least part of one. Shuttle buses will take people from the town hall to Greenhead Park if they want to hear the finale of the Prom in the Park.
