President's wife in the fashion spotlight

FASHION watchers will be studying French president's wife Carla Sarkozy today to see whether she varies from a diet of Dior on day two of the state visit to Britain.

She wore four outfits from the celebrated French fashion house yesterday.

Sun fashion editor Erica Davies said the President's wife "dazzled" in a midnight blue silk georgette dress at the banquet but looked "more like part of her jet's staff" when she arrived at Heathrow in a grey, belted coat and pillbox hat.

Carola Long, in the Independent described Mrs Sarkozy's arrival outfit as "astonishingly demure, almost nun-like" but added that it was hardly surprising she wanted to look chaste the day after a nude photo was published in the British press.

But Hilary Alexander of the Telegraph was complimentary: "By choosing a Parisian designer she has shown support for her country and one of its key industries," she said.
