All's fair with fashion; HOLME VALLEY

The Fairtrade Fashion Show and Ethical Market Place at Holmfirth Methodist Church was a great success with standing room only for the second year running.

Helen Robinson introduced the evening, explaining the reasons for supporting Fairtrade and how the quality garments being modelled had been manufactured.

Helen introduced the models, Grace Hetherington, Freya Stockford, Sarah Hirst, Maddy Isaac and Leo Stockford, and described the garments from People Tree and Bishopton Trading that they modelled.

The Ethical Market Place was a new venture this year. Patrons enjoyed browsing and buying from a range of interesting stalls including Revolve from Huddersfield, Ocarina from Colne in Lancashire, The Earth Collection from Wakefield, Radish from Leeds and Sheila Salveson's Reycled Bags from Slaithwaite.

The Holme Valley Fairtrade Support Group is grateful to the Co-operative Group for their generous donation of Fairtrade prizes for the raffle and to Holmfirth Methodist Church for use of their premises.

BROCKHOLES

The Rev John Hardy led the Transformation of the Cross service on Easter Sunday at the Methodist Church. The organist was Mr Keith Garside.

Brockholes Village Trust organised an evening for gardeners in the village hall. President Hilda Goddard invited Joe Maiden, well-known for his weekly gardening spot on Radio Leeds. He was welcomed by Trust Chairman David Wyles. Joe entertained the audience with his humour and gardening expertise. He brought along a large variety of plants, seedlings and seeds, about which he had something to say. He also answered questions and his plants were available for sale at the end of the evening.

Easter communion at St George's Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes. Stephen Dufto read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. Verena Wood played the piano for the anthem "Sing Choirs of Heaven" sung by the vicar. Having illustrated his sermon using an egg, the vicar gave chocolate eggs to the children. Noel Clark was the organist.

During the Holy Week, services were held on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, St Georges' choir also joined that of St Mary's at the Passover meal and service on Maundy Thursday.

HELME

On Good Friday members of the congregation of Christ Church joined in the Walk of Witness and in the evening went to St. Bartholomew's church to listen to Olivet to Calvary.

Easter Day started with an Easter breakfast followed at 10.30am with a special Sunday Communion, led by the Rev Dennis Shields. The lesson was read by churchwarden Jean Gooden and the gospel by churchwarden Janet Rockett. The address based on the gospel reading was given by the Rev Dennis, who was also the celebrant, assisted at the altar by Janet who along with churchwarden Jean Gooden took up the elements. The offertory was taken by Christine Hirst and Barbara Quarmby. Prayers of intercession were offered by Ken Gooden. and organist was Lynne Blackburn. Coffee and refreshments were served after the service in the community area.

HEPWORTH

Holy Trinity Church was the venue for several services during Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday, Hepworth Junior & Infant School held their Easter Service, led by headteacher Alison Shaw. On Good Friday, a short act of worship was held at noon, conducted by the Rev Keith Griffin who also conducted the Easter Day parish Eucharist on Sunday. Inside, the church was beautifully decorated with spring flowers but outside, in the wintry conditions, the snow didn't deter the children from enjoying an Easter egg hunt in the churchyard.

HOLMBRIDGE

The Camera Club annual exhibition was held on Monday.

Trophies were awarded to Victor Harris for best landscape; Ian Gold for best natural history; Chris Newsome for best record and Peter Bartlett for best pictorial. Ian Gold and Pete Bartlett shared the trophy for best individual print. The annual dinner and presentation of certificates and trophies will be held on April 18 at Meltham Golf Club.

Midweek holy communion at St David's Church was led by the Rev Geoff Banks. Lessons were read by Ian Gold.

Members of the Monkey Business, Over 60s and Tumble Tots groups met during the week. The pre-school held an Easter lunch at the band room. The Rev Geoff Bamford led Good Friday evening prayers.

Parish Eucharist at St David's Church on Easter Day conducted by the Rev Geoff Banks. Lessons were read by Dale Woods and Laura Bar tle. Thelma Nelson led intercessions and Dorothy Parker administered the chalice.

Creche and junior church were led by Joyce Smith and John Burdon. The choir sang the anthem Rise Again. Words and music by organist Eddie Purcell.

HOLMFIRTH

Easter Sunday was celebrated at Holy Trinity with 10.30 Parish Eucharist the Rev Keith Griffin presided. Diane Whitford was the reader and SueWinter led the Intercessions.

Carlton Tinsdeall assisted with the chalice. The Rev Griffin spoke about the story of the passion and said that Easter is about us now, celebrating the story and what the resurrection means to us.

Easter weekend was a busy time for Holmfirth Christian Centre. On Saturday morning and afternoon members were out in the town centre singing and handing out Easter eggs and daffodils and to ask residents to think of the reason why we have Easter.
