Athletics: Little to light up gloom! Rugby League

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), Nov 15, 2008

WHAT a grim match!

The weather was terrible and the pitch as bad.

Meltham's defence tried hard, but the hosts proved too strong.

The wingers showed some spirit with try-saving tackles from Sam Mate (best back), while Cory McDonagh and Matt Brearley made determined runs in sapping conditions.

Chris Brearley and Lewis Fletcher put in great performances against powerful opposition, while there was solid work from Daniel King (joint top tackler and best forward), Oliver Szlachcic (joint top tackler) and Ryan Hirst. Jack Evans covered well and was Man Of The Match.

Although the wheels came off the chariot at Newsome last week, Meltham were back in the driving seat this week.

Dominic Kendall, a contender for leading try-scorer, was again on song, while great passing skills were on show from Jack Clifford (Man Of The Match) and Conor Donaldson.

Kendall opened the scoring on 10 minutes and Clifford converted.

Meltham then lost their way in freezing conditions and Moldgreen hit back with a try.

With guidance from coach Williams ringing in their ears, the All Blacks started the second half brightly, and Jordan Williams weaved his way over.

Moldgreen stormed back and at 16-12 the game was slipping away until Kendall burst over and Christian Pestell landed a superb conversion.

Best forward Pestell then crashed over after good hard work from Alex Zatorski (most improved ), Jacob Craven and Jamie Atkinson .

Zatorski then drove the ball between the sticks (16-26) and Clifford finished off with some individual brilliance from 80 yards out. There were great performances from Lewis Bull (trainer of the week and best back), and newcomer Jacob Kaye.
