Letter: MAILBAG - Broken promises

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England),  Sept 27, 2008

Byline: JASON MCCARTNEY

AS the dust settles on Gordon Brown's conference speech in Manchester it's as good a time as any to look back at the broken promises he made a year ago when addressing the Labour party.

Among the pledges broken by Gordon Brown over the past 12 months are: Ensuring low inflation and stable growth Five-year sentences for all gun crimes Using new powers to ban alcohol in trouble spots Introducing individual budgets for personal care Abolishing child poverty Empowering Parliament to make the final decisions about peace and war Five hours of sport a week for all pupils Increasing house-building Counting people in and out of Britain Building ten new eco towns You can also add to that list "No more boom and bust". Yet again the MP for Kirkaldy and Cowdenbeath has put soundbites, short term headlines and his own political survival ahead of the country's wellbeing.
