Moldgreen on a roll; Spotlight on the local leagues

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England),  Sept 27, 2008

Byline: By NEIL ATKINSON News Editor

PROMOTED side Moldgreen have opened their top-flight campaign in the Works League with two excellent victories.

They followed up their opening-day 4-2 victory at Heywood Irish Centre with a hard-earned but deserved 3-1 win over a strong Uppermill side.

It has given them a lead at the top of the fledgling table.

The scorers in their victory over Uppermill were Smith (2) and Oliver.

The reigning champions Moldgreen Con have a win and a draw from their opening fixtures.

They began with a thumping 7-2 home win over Netherton but last weekend were held to a 0-0 home draw by Bay Athletic, who have been promoted.

The league has welcomed an influx of new teams and they have had mixed fortunes.

Sovereign Sports, who were in the District League Division II last year, went down at Aimbry in the first game but hit back with a 3-2 win at Berry Brow last Saturday.

Aimbry followed up their win over Sovereign with a 3-0 victory over fellow newcomers Springhead.

And new side Lepton Highlanders opened their account with a 1-0 victory over another new team, Kirkheaton Rovers, thanks to a strike by Binns.
