There was one service in All Hallows Parish Church for the eighteenth Sunday after Trinity. Rachel Atkinson welcomed the worshippers to the morning service of Sung Eucharist which was led by the Rev Graham Whitcroft. The prayers of intercession were led by Doreen Slater and churchwarden Glyn Phillips, gave the reading for the day from the fourth chapter of St Paul's second letter to the Corinthians. Reader, Mrs Janet Roberts, read from the ninth chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew and preached the sermon onGod's Call and our Response. The chalice and paten for the celebration of the communion were taken-up by Mr Phillips and churchwarden, John Keighley and Mr Whitcroft was assisted at the distribution by Hilary Berry and Mrs Roberts.

The duties of sidesmen were performed by Mr and Mrs Russell Smith and Jean Sutcliffe. Music for the service was provided by Doreen Barraclough. After the service, Christine Rangeley provided refreshments for the worshippers.

In the evening, Lorraine Lockwood and Vicky Daniels led the young people and their guests from the church in the monthly, contemporary act of worship, Synaxis, at the Hub. Karen McCann organised the milkshakes, coffee and cakes and the music was provided by the young people's band.

The Burton Friendship Club welcomed three new members on Tuesday when they met for their weekly meeting in The Hub. The speaker for the afternoon was member Doris Summersonwho spoke about her love of architecture and how she particularly enjoyed exploring old cathedrals, Durhamand Lincoln being particular favourites. She brought along plans and explained in detail all the different parts of the buildings and spoke about the magnificent stonework and beautifully carved woodwork which was there to enjoy. She was warmly thanked for a most interesting talk and the raffle was drawn.

Thewinnerwas Jean Marsden.Memberswere served tea and biscuits by Mesdames Ramsay, Ellis and Heeley.

A spokesman for the group said that they were still looking for a new leader to take over the club in 2009. Anyone who is interested and has good organising skills should contact one of themembers or come along to one of the Tuesday afternoon meetings.

Kirkburton and surrounding villages were amongst those hit by a power cut in electricity on Monday night.
