WATCH IT! Famous, Rich and Homeless BBC1, Wed, 9pm IT'S an intriguing idea - getting down on the streets with the homeless.

Yet there is always a nagging doubt that the so-called 'celebrities' who volunteered to join this new reality show are doing it more for themselves.

The one redeeming feature is that the project is overseen by John Bird, the no-nonsense, tough-talking co-founder of The Big Issue and a man who calls a spade a spade.

He is certain to ensure that the Famous Five - tennis star Annabel Croft, journalist Rosie Boycott, actor Bruce Jones, comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli (pictured) and peer the Marquess of Blandford - get to meet and to know the real homeless.

Bird said: "I think their expectations were quite naive. There was such an utter sense of loss when they stepped out on the streets with absolutely nothing." It will certainly be a little different to C-list celebrities showering themselves in the Australian jungle, dining out on a diet of worms and grubs or watching hens lay eggs.
