University of the Third Age celebrates 25 years

AFTER 25 successful years a Huddersfield group are welcoming new members.

The Huddersfield and District University of the Third Age(U3A) is an organisation where people over 50 can learn new skills.

The group's new prospectus is out this month and volunteers are encouraging people to join up.

Member Kathleen Robinson, 69, said:"You can learn new skills.

"It's a good social gathering and you can make friends.

"Like me and the ladies from our embroidery classes." Kathleen said she and the rest of the group meet for coffees during the week.

She added: "A lot of the ladies are widows and they come because they're lonely and they want to keep their brains going." The U3A is open to those over 50 and those registered disabled.

Classes include art and drawing, dress making, computing and languages.

Volunteers are on hand at Huddersfield Library on Saturday from 10am to 12pm or Monday from 1pm to 3pm to meet people interested in becoming members.

Annual subscriptions are pounds 8 and class fees are pounds 8 per class per term.
