HONLEY CRICKET CLUB; Sports Team of the Year

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), June 23, 2009

HONLEY Cricket Club's winning streak continues.

A remarkable rise to league and cup domination has seen Honley Cricket Club notch a unique record.

They won the Drakes Huddersfield League and Sykes Cup double in 2005 and went on to claim the league title another three times in a row, doing the double in 2006 and narrowly losing the cup final in 2007.

Last year they took the championship by three points after Golcar - who had been top for most of the season - threw it away in the final game of the season.

The icing on the cake came the day after when Honley became the best team in Yorkshire, winning the Black Sheep Trophy, a champion of champions cup for all the league winners in the region.

Club captain Robert Moore credited for the team's sudden march up to top spot, said: "We had a great year last year though we've had a slower start to this season. But we shall keep striving for success." He praised the spirit of community at the club and said that 10 of the best talents at the club all lived within a two miles radius of the village.

"We are over the moon with this award.

There were two remarkable teams competing for the same category so we are thrilled." Chairman Simon Walker added: "Everything seemed to come together at once, we've had some very good overseas players over the last few years and a strong committee." Off the field Honley have improved their facilities and increased the number of social events in a bid to raise more money.
