Countertenor David Daniels is in dazzling form, bringing acute dramatic instincts and a well-stocked arsenal of vocal colors to this album of concentrated monodramas by Alessandro Scarlatti. While Daniels is consistently impressive in florid passages - as in the concluding allegro of "II genio di Mitilde" or the impatient first aria of "Perche tacete, regolati concenti?" - his ability to maintain narrative tension in recitative is equally distinguished; the doleful central section of "II rosignolo" is shaded with extraordinary variety, its words given pinpoint focus, yet it moves forward smoothly to the final aria with a sense of inevitability....
