‘Counterparts’, a short story in James Joyce's Dubliners (1914), written in 1905. Farrington, an inefficient copy-clerk in a law office, is bullied by his immediate superior, Mr Alleyne. Returning home drunk to find his wife out at the chapel, he takes out his resentment on his son.
