‘Lough Derg Pilgrim, The’ (1828), William Carleton's first published work. Originally entitled ‘A Pilgrimage to Patrick's Purgatory’ and written with the encouragement of Caesar Otway , who published it in his Christian Examiner , it appeared with Father Butler in 1829.
It tells of the author's adventures as a pilgrim; initially mistaken for a priest, he is robbed of his clothes and money by a confidence trickster.
